LCL Weight or Measure: CBM, Revenue Tons & Local Fees
Calculate LCL weight or measure across cartons, crates, and pallets, then turn a base W/M rate into an all-in quote comparison.
For a common LCL weight-or-measure calculation, total the shipment volume in cubic metres and gross weight in metric tonnes. The larger value is the raw W/M quantity. Apply the quoted minimum and rounding, multiply by the applicable per-W/M charges, then add fixed origin, documentation, destination, and inland fees.

The formula
Worked example
Put numbers through it
Ten crates measuring 100 × 80 × 80 cm and weighing 420 kg each total 6.4 CBM and 4.2 metric tonnes. Under a common 1 CBM versus 1,000 kg comparison, volume controls at 6.4 W/M units before minimums, rounding, and local charges.

Common questions
Answers you can verify.
Each answer states the planning rule and points to the longer working guide when the decision needs more context.
What does W/M mean in LCL freight?
W/M means weight or measure. A common basis compares shipment cubic metres with gross metric tonnes and uses the larger quantity, subject to the tariff or quotation.
How do I calculate LCL CBM for multiple cartons?
Calculate each handling-unit type separately using finished outside dimensions and quantity, convert each result to cubic metres, and add the lines once without double-counting palletised cargo.
Read the worked guide ↗When does weight control instead of volume?
Under a 1 CBM to 1,000 kg comparison, gross metric tonnes control when that number is greater than total CBM. The quoted density or revenue-ton rule may differ.
How does a minimum W/M charge work?
Compare the raw W/M result with the minimum stated for each affected fee line. A shipment below a one-W/M minimum may be billed at one unit for that line.
Read the worked guide ↗Why is an LCL invoice higher than the ocean rate?
Origin handling, documentation, security, consolidation, destination CFS, delivery order, customs services, storage, and inland transport can outweigh the headline ocean charge.

Go from formula to operating decision.
Build cargo lines, total CBM and gross weight once, and apply weight or measure without double-counting quantity.
