Calculate the base W/M quantity
For a common LCL weight-or-measure comparison, calculate total shipment volume in cubic metres and total gross weight in metric tonnes. The larger number becomes the base revenue-ton or W/M quantity. A 6.4 CBM shipment weighing 4.2 tonnes is volume-driven at 6.4 units.
This is only a model. The quotation or tariff controls the actual minimum, unit definition, density rule, and rounding.
Compare all-in quotes
Ocean freight can be a small part of the invoice. Put origin handling, documentation, export clearance, consolidation, destination handling, deconsolidation, delivery order, customs brokerage, storage risk, and inland transport on the comparison sheet.
Check whether fees are per shipment, per W/M, per document, or subject to a minimum. Align currency and exchange-rate assumptions before ranking options.
- Compare the same Incoterm and endpoints.
- Record free-time and storage exposure.
- Ask which charges are payable at destination.
Audit the invoice
Keep the quoted measurements and fees beside the final bill of lading and invoice. If the warehouse remeasures cargo, request the measurement record. Reconcile every difference before using the old quote as a future budget.
